The climactic break of Supertubos, nestled in Peniche, Portugal, set the stage for a thrilling finale to the 2024 MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, offering a dazzling display of high-performance surfing.
Johanne Defay clinched her inaugural Portuguese crown, while Griffin Colapinto secured his second triumph at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, as Supertubos unveiled pristine afternoon conditions.
Colapinto's near-flawless performance at Supertubos propelled him to his second MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal victory, triumphing over his close friend and formidable competitor, Ethan Ewing, in a commanding display during the Final. With this win, Colapinto snatched the coveted yellow jersey from Ewing's grasp, setting the stage for the elite surfers to converge at the upcoming Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.
“Last year was fun and weird at the same time, I really enjoyed my time at home while injured, it was a break I deserved. Coming back to contest was a bit hard, just finding my feet in my surfing and contest fire I guess. I super worked hard, I’m just so happy with what my team did to make me feel confident and happy in my own skin.” - Johanne Defay post win.
Reflecting on his victory, Colapinto likened his momentum to a roaring fire, suggesting that adding an extra log only intensifies its strength. He expressed his elation, particularly considering his journey back to competitive surfing after undergoing hip surgery during the off-season. Despite initial setbacks, Colapinto's perseverance paid off, culminating in a triumphant win that left him exhilarated and motivated for the challenges ahead.
